  • Abstract :

This presentative will explore the theory and application of direct, non invasive, biological interface technology. In recent years, the cutting edge of interface technology has focused on developing devices which enable humans to interact more efficiently with computer generated environments. The field of virtual reality has driven much of this effort. We have seen the development of gloves, motion tracking systems and other devices which capture natural human action facilitating an ease of interaction with complex information. The next paradigm in human-computer interface technology will emerge from technologies that tap directly into the energy coming from the human body. Current advances in biological signal processing allow humans to directly interface with computers. Technologies that use bioelectric signals (electric fields generated from muscles, eyes, and the brain), as inputs are already commercially available. These technologies and others to follow are mapping the human neuro-muscular system for an optimized interaction which will allow for reflexive response times to complex multidimensional data. Such an interface allows for a truly experimental interaction with information. The first and most promising applications of these emerging technologies are in the fields of health care and education. In our laboratories at loma linda university medical center we are active in implementing these technologies to improve the quality of life. By using facial muscles disabled children who have not walked for 5 five years have flown around in virtual environments. These biological interfaces have been used to entice children who are stuck in the hospital to exercise. Disabled patients are able to remotely control devices such as cars and robotic arms. Artists and musicians who have lost function of limbs are able to perform their arts once again. This truly is the next paradigm.
