Impeachment is Not Enough
A preponderance of evidence shows that the highest officials of the Bush Administration, in collusion with many other officials from the Pentagon, CIA, FBI, FEMA, NSA, NORAD, New York City officials, air-traffic contollers, airline executives, controlled demolitions experts, computer graphics technicians, media executives, and others together planned and committed the horrible attacks of 9/11/2001 against the Pentagon and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The 9/11 attacks were immediately blamed on some bogus 'Arab highjackers', a half dozen of whom were later confirmed to be still alive, and therefore innocent, after the 9/11 attacks

SC II: Raynor's Voice, Graphics Requirements, New Screens
August 20, 2008 6:00 AM
Based on information gleaned from a technical paper released at this year's SIGGRPAH (an annual conference on computer graphics), StarCraftWire.net has been able to reveal information about the graphics requirements of Blizzard's upcoming StarCraft II, as well as some never before seens screenshots featuring Jim Raynor.
Blizzard Quote:
For Starcraft II, we wanted to maximize compatibility with less capable systems to ensure hassle-free game play for as broad a player base as possible. Yet we also wanted to utilize the full potential of any available hardware to ensure the game’s looks were competitive. This meant supporting a wide range of hardware, from ATI Radeon 9800/NVIDIA GeForce FX’s to the ATI Radeon HD 4800s and NVIDIA GeForce G200s
Blizzplanet is also offering new information about Jim Raynor with confirmation that Robert Clotworthy, original voice of the character, will not be lending his voice to the game this time around.
Robert Clotworthy informed Blizzplanet the following:
"I just found out today that I will not be returning as the voice of Jim Raynor. The casting director of Starcraft 2 contacted Blizzard and was told that they appreciated my work, but were going in another direction. I am obviously disappointed by their decision. I was looking forward to returning as Raynor and was hoping that Blizzard would at the very least have given me the opportunity of auditioning.
It has been my privilege to have been the voice of Jim Raynor. I am disappointed by Blizzard's decision, but I must respect it. I wish Blizzard only the best with StarCraft 2, and I am certain the game will live up to everyone's expectations. Thank you to all the fans who have given me their support and enthusiasm, it means a lot to me.

Intel's New 'Nehalem' Chip Gets a Name: Core i7
Intel said Monday that its first desktop processor based on its new Nehalem microarchitecture will be called Intel Core i7. The company also previewed some details about its upcoming Larrabee architecture.
The i7 is the first of a variety of Nehalem-based products designed to provide high performance and energy efficiency, according to Intel.
Sean Maloney, Intel's general manager of sales and marketing, said the "core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward." He added that Intel will focus its substantial marketing resources around that name and related products.
The Core i7 processor brand logo will be used for high-performance desktop PCs, with blue for the standard edition and a separate black logo for the Extreme Edition, the highest-end model. Processor model numbers will differentiate chips, and Nehalem-based chips are expected to be in production in the fourth quarter of this year.
The new processors will feature simultaneous multithreading, which Intel calls Hyper-Threading technology, allowing it to handle eight software threads on the four processor cores. An integrated memory controller hub is used to pump up performance, and the chips will be manufactured using the company's 45-nanometer process.
Even as Nehalem-based chips are moving toward the launch pad, Intel will be presenting details Tuesday about its "many-core" architecture, code-named Larrabee, at the SIGGRAPH 2008 conference in Los Angeles.
The company has released some details about the SIGGRAPH paper that will be presented. It will describe Larrabee as "a new approach to the software rendering 3-D pipeline," and as a many-core programming model.
The first Larrabee-based products will be intended for the personal computer graphics market, and are expected to be released next year or in 2010. The company noted that Larrabee will be the first many-core x86 architecture in the industry, which means that it will be...

New Intel Graphics Chips Could Have Wider Uses
Intel on Monday was releasing the first technical details of a new family of chips intended to soup up computer graphics and, eventually, a broad range of computing tasks.
The new microprocessor family, code-named Larrabee, will be available in late 2009 or early 2010. Intel is releasing the details of its plans before the Siggraph industry conference starts in Los Angeles next Monday.
The company said it would initially aim Larrabee at the personal-computer graphics market, where its "many-core" design, with more than a dozen and eventually hundreds of processing units on a single silicon chip, would be especially useful.
But Anwar Ghuloum, an Intel parallel computing engineer, said that over the next half-decade Intel planned to make the chip design available to an increasingly broad spectrum of the computing world, from Windows and Macintosh desktop personal computers to handhelds and even supercomputers.
The market for add-on graphics accelerators, prized by PC game players, is now dominated by Nvidia and the ATI division of AMD. Intel's approach will be distinguished by its reliance on the industry standard x86 instruction set, which will allow the chips to take advantage of a huge library of existing software.
In 2004, after finding that it could not make its chips faster because they were overheating, Intel adopted a strategy it referred to as a "right-hand turn."
Intel switched to improving performance by increasing the number of processing elements, or cores, on each chip. That led first to dual-core and now quad-core chips.
Analysts said the first generation of Larrabee may have 16 to 48 cores, depending on the performance goal.
Intel has tried several approaches to chip design, but none of them have had the impact of its x86 family, which was originally introduced three decades ago. Architectures that have been less successful include the Itanium and the 432, neither of...

Intel Details Larrabee's Many-Core Graphics Architecture
Intel revealed details Monday about its upcoming family of graphics processors with multiple cores, code-named Larrabee. The new processors are expected to compete with market leaders NVIDIA and AMD's ATI division.
Details unveiled in an Intel-authored paper include a new approach to rendering 3-D, a programming model and performance analysis for several applications, and multiple processor engines. Intel plans to present its plan at the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles on Aug. 12.
The first Larrabee-based product will target the personal-computer graphics market and is expected in 2009 or 2010. Larrabee will be the industry's first many-core x86 Intel architecture, which means it will be based on an array of many processors. The individual processors are similar to the Intel processors that power the Internet, laptops, PCs and servers, the company said.
"Intel is not the first vendor to go down this road. IBM's Power-based Cell processor, and actually the multicore chips that IBM built for Microsoft's XBox and Nintendo, were the first," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT Research. "IBM's work in the multicore space effectively knocked Intel out of the computer game-console market."
First or not, Intel expects Larrabee to kick-start an industrywide effort to create and optimize software for the dozens, hundreds and thousands of cores expected to power future computers. Intel said it has a number of internal teams, projects and software-related efforts under way to speed the transition, but its Tera-Scale Computing research program has been its largest. Intel said it has partnered with more than 400 universities, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and companies such as Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard.
"Over time, the consistency of Intel architecture and thus developer freedom afforded by the Larrabee architecture will bring about massive innovation in many areas and market segments," Intel said Monday.
As an example, Intel pointed to how...

Open-source OGD1 graphics card up for pre-order
Filed under: Peripherals
Heads-up, open-source gurus -- your next play toy is officially ready to be pre-ordered. The OGD1 is a self-proclaimed "high-end FPGA prototyping kit and hardware engineering platform, equipped with the peripherals needed to develop and test computer graphics architectures." Essentially, it's designed to be used by students of FPGA programming, engineers hunting down a dev platform or hobbyists who just can't stop hacking stuff up. The board itself features twin dual-link DVI outputs, 256MB of RAM, PCI / PCI-X compatibility, a passive cooling system and a 128-bit memory bus. Of course, such a niche product doesn't come without a premium, so don't yell too loudly when reading that this one will cost you $1,500 to take home. Heck, it's only $1,400 if you're one of the first hundred to commit.
Graphics market soft in first quarter
Sales of computer graphics chips had a slightly lower than usual seasonal downturn, leading one analyst to issue a cautious market projection for the next few quarters for the sector that can be a bellwether for computer sales and a key indicator of electronics sales overall.

New Devices Bring New, Immersive Interfaces
It has been more than two decades since Scotty tried to use a computer mouse as a microphone to control a Macintosh in "Star Trek IV."
Since then, personal computer users have continued to live under the tyranny of the mice, windows, icons and pull-down menus originally invented at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s and popularized by Apple and Microsoft in the next decade.
Last year, however, the arrival of the Wii and the iPhone began to break down the logjam in technological innovation for the way humans interact with computers.
Both devices extend the idea of directly controlling objects on the screen and blending that ability with visually compelling physics software that brings computer screens to life in new, immersive ways.
With a Wii, a wave of the hand can slam a tennis ball in cyberspace; with the iPhone, a flick of a finger can slide a photograph across the screen like paper on a table.
The idea of directly manipulating information on a computer screen is almost as old as computer graphics terminals, going back at least to 1963, to Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad drawing system, which he created at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his doctoral thesis.
Since then, a thriving scientific and engineering discipline has sprung up around systems that bridge what was originally called the man-machine interface.
There has been a broad exploration of pointing devices, alternatives to keyboards for entering information, voice-recognition technologies and even sensors that capture and interact with human brain waves.
What is new is a convergence of more powerful and less expensive computer hardware and an inspired set of mostly younger software designers who came of age well past the advent of the original graphical user interface paradigm of the 1970s and '80s.
This new generation is "mostly under 25," said Joy Mountford, who until...

VIDEO: Ford spins F-150 at six Gs... for real
Filed under: Trucks/Pickups, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Ford
You were watching the Super Bowl yesterday, right? If for no other reason than to see the commercials, of course. Ford ran an ad that demonstrated the "Built Ford Tough" ethos by hooking up an F-150 pickup to a centrifuge by its front tow hooks and spinning it around in a circle like your favorite uncle used to do when you were a kid. When we saw the ad last night, we instantly wondered if Ford really did it or the power of computer graphics was at play. As it turns out, the automaker employed no camera tricks, no computer enhancements, and just used a giant centrifuge that spun the truck at six Gs. At those forces, the hooks, which Ford points out are looped instead of hooked, were subjected to the equivalent of six times the vehicle's weight as it swung around at over 60 mph.
If you missed it, or just want to see the hoonage again, we've got the video for you after the jump, and if you follow this link, Ford's got a "Behind the Scenes" video of how the commercial was made. Just don't try this at home... with your giant centrifuge.
